How to Know It's Time for New Tires
Tires are an investment, and unless you’re looking for aesthetic upgrades, you probably don’t want to replace an entire set until you need to. Here are a few things you can look out for that indicate it’s time for new tires:
Tread Wear Bars are Flush with the Tread
If you have tire wear bars, these are your go-to source on when to replace your tires. These small rubber bars fit between the tread on your tires. Once the tire tread has worn down flush with your wear bar, it’s time for some new tires. If you don’t have tire wear bars, you can always do the penny test. Just take a penny and place it head-side down in the groove of the tread. If it covers Abe’s forehead, great! You’re in business. If not, they need to be replaced.
Cracked Rubber
Tires are made of rubber, and when rubber gets old, it dries out and starts to crack, which can lead to a slow leak and eventual tire failure. Sunlight, heat, cold, and chemicals from road exposure can all contribute to this. When you start noticing cracks, it’s time to replace them.
Uneven Tire Tread
Vehicle alignment, tire pressure, lack of rotation, and worn steering can all contribute to unevenly worn tires. This can decrease the life of your tires and cause you to need to replace them sooner. If you’ve noticed your tires are wearing unevenly, we can help diagnose the problem.
Tire Pressure Issues
If you’ve noticed your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light has been turning on more, or if you’ve visibly noticed your tires look low, you could have a leak. Tires naturally lose around 1 PSI each month, which is normal. But if you have to air yours up all the time, you probably have a larger leak that needs to be repaired or have the tire replaced altogether.
Sidewall Bulges
When you hit a curb or pothole, it can damage the inner lining of your tire and lead to sidewall bulges. These bulges can rupture, causing the tire to blow, which can be extremely dangerous. If you’ve noticed a bulge in your tire, at the very least, you need to get it inspected, but it probably needs to be replaced.
